Observation and Concentration on the Observer by Jiří Vacek is a concise yet profound exposition of the difference between mindfulness and Self-enquiry. While Buddhist observation sharpens awareness of the present moment, it keeps attention fixed on objects. Vacek teaches that true realisation begins only when attention turns inward — to that which observes.

The practice of Self-enquiry (Ātmavičāra) involves conscious concentration on the all-observing awareness within us. By gradually turning attention from the world to the observer, the practitioner discovers the pure “I am” consciousness, free from ego and time. This realisation follows the law of attention: energy flows where awareness goes; thus, focusing on the Self strengthens divinity and dissolves ignorance.

Vacek explains the interplay of centripetal forces leading to God and centrifugal forces binding the soul to the world. Liberation lies in redirecting attention and dissolving the latter through steady awareness of the divine Self. The book culminates in a practical guided meditation and a declaration that consciousness itself is God — unmanifested, omnipresent, and self-aware.

Written in clear, disciplined language, the work serves both as a philosophical explanation and a practical manual. It calls readers to live in continuous awareness of the witnessing consciousness — the true Self that is identical with God.

Some of the chapters are:

  • Buddhist conscious observation
  • Correct progress in practice of conscious observation
  • Atmavichara and lokavichara – centripetal and centrifugal forces
  • Practice leading to realization of observer or witness
  • Consciousness is God and therefore it acts divinely
